Garage Door Hinge Replacement
Watching from inside as the door opens, you can see the gap between the second and third panels open up on one side as they turn the corner into the ceiling, then close again.
In plain words
A hinge visit runs in a settled order. The opener is disconnected and the door is left closed, because with the panels stacked on one another and the bottom resting on the floor, the hinges are carrying very little. The technician looks at every hinge on every joint and checks the rollers and the screw holes at the same time. Worn hinges are then changed one at a time so the door is never without a joint, each new part matching the number and gauge of the old. Then the door is run by hand, checked for a flush fit and balance, and the opener is reconnected and tested.
How the visit goesWith the door closed and a flashlight on the inside face, one of the hinges near the edge has a crack running from the screw hole to the knuckle. The steel around it is brown with rust, and the pin looks loose in its barrel.

How the visit goes

The holes and the stile behind them
A hinge only holds if its fasteners do. The technician tests each screw for grip and looks at the stile it threads into: the folded steel channel at the panel edge on a steel door, the hinge support plate behind the skin where one is fitted, or the solid timber of a wood door. Holes that have stretched, rusted or torn are noted, because a new hinge on a stripped hole rocks just like the old one. Where the metal is thin or the wood is soft, the plan changes from screws to a through-bolt with a nut and washer, or a backer plate that spreads the load across fresh material.
Going over the rest of the hardware
With tools out and the door still, the technician goes down the whole door: every hinge screw snugged, roller stems and hinge knuckles given a garage door lubricant, top fixtures checked for tight fasteners, and the track brackets on the jambs confirmed secure. The bottom brackets are looked at but left alone, because they anchor the lift cables and are under spring tension. Struts and their fasteners get the same pass. This sweep takes little time and usually catches the next loose screw before it becomes the next cracked hinge, so the door leaves in better shape than the single repair would suggest.
What was fitted, written down
Before leaving, the technician tells you which hinges were replaced, their numbers and gauge, whether rollers or backer plates went on, and anything corrected along the way such as a wrong-numbered hinge or a loose track bracket. Write it inside the door manual or on a card near the opener, along with the door's make and panel count. Hinge widths and hole patterns vary between manufacturers, so the next technician, or you at the parts counter, can match parts without measuring from scratch. If some hinges were left in place as sound, their condition goes on the same note so you know what to watch.

What affects the quote
Opener adjustment afterwards
A door that folds freely again sometimes needs the opener's force and travel settings reset and its reversal retested. That adjustment is named when it is needed.
How many hinges are changed
One cracked centre hinge is the smallest job. Several worn hinges across two or three joints, which is common on an older door, means more parts and more time, and the quote lists each.
Access to the door
Shelving against the door, a car that has to stay inside, or a tall door that needs a stepladder for the upper joints all affect the time quoted.
What to have ready
- Is the loose or broken hinge at the edge of the door or in the middle?
- Is the door closed, open or stuck partway right now?
- Is a roller leaning or partly out of the track anywhere?
Garage Door Hinge Replacement: questions
QuestionsWhy is there a gap opening between two panels as the door goes up?
The two panels at that joint are no longer being held together on one side. A hinge that has cracked through, pulled its screws or lost its pin lets the panels hinge open around the remaining hardware, and the gap shows as they round the curve where the joint flexes most. Replacing the failed hinge, and checking its partner on the other end, brings the panels back into line.
What information helps when I book the visit?
Whether the door is closed, open or stuck; where the noise or the gap appears and roughly how high; whether you can see a cracked, bent or loose hinge and whether it is at the edge or the middle; whether the door is a single or a double, steel or wood, and how many panels it has; and whether anything hit the door lately. A photo of the hinge and its stamped number is useful.
Are hinges on a wood door different?
The hinges themselves are the same numbered galvanized parts, but the fastening changes. Wood stiles take lag screws or carriage bolts with nuts and washers rather than self-drilling metal screws, and the timber's condition matters as much as the hinge. Softened or split wood around the holes is filled, reinforced or bridged with a backer plate before the hinge goes back on, so the new hardware bites into something solid.
